Greetings from Prague – and from Radio Silence

Share

At the excellent advice of someone whose excellent advice has never failed me yet, I’m taking a one week vacation from Facebook and Twitter and a couple of other social media sites. This isn’t self-righteousness, I make no apology for loving Facebook and what it affords – but my friend said his recent self-imposed exile was “like having an extra week’s holiday.” Who could resist that?

If you’re interested in how, I installed Stayfocusd on my Macbook, and temporarily deleted the Facebook and Twitter from my phone.  It will be interesting to see how many ways there are to get round that.  I’m already an almost daily user of Freedom for when I’m writing, and after only half an hour, I think I’m going to love Stayfocusd.

The Olympic Park – photo gallery

Had a wonderful time on Wednesday visiting the Olympic park.  What’s really impressive is the amount of wonderful flowers that have been planted. It was thanks to Gardeners’ World preview of the park that I knew it was worth walking around the river banks. You can see these buildings a thousand times on TV and still not get a sense of how exciting it is to be there, how enormous the park is, the scale of the buildings, but above all, how friendly and upbeat everybody is. The volunteers have made this event into something more special than I’ve experienced in London in a lifetime. I would have loved to have got tickets to see something, but even just walking around and hearing the cheers coming from the aquatics centre was exciting enough.

The Tooting heron

Heron in Tooting

This wonderful heron visits our end of Tooting now and again. It’s a wonderful sight. The only one I’d ever seen before moving here was a concrete one in the back garden of our house in Dorset. Funnily enough, I’m going to Heron Quays just now…

Zagreb

A tram going into the sunset along Juriši?eva. Click here to go to my Zagreb gallery Just back from a whirlwind trip to Zagreb, where I spent about a year and a half as a student back in 1982-1984. I’ve wanted to go back ever since then, but life and events somehow conspired against it, and I think I have also always been slightly afraid of spoiling the magic of memory. Then, a week ago, I took my courage and my credit card in both hands and bought a ticket so that I could finally lay some ghosts to rest, and awaken some others. In the intervening twenty two years, it’s the things I didn’t photograph that have remained the clearest and most vivid mental images. I couldn’t know, back then, what images I would cherish and yearn to see again, so my Zagreb gallery is an attempt to put some of this right. Some of the pictures are impressions of how Zagreb has changed since I was there, some try to capture the things that seem the same, and others – which might seem quite dull as pictures – are just aides-memoire for me, friends and fellow-students in far-flung places now, who only have to see a certain tree, or the light falling on a tramline in a certain way to feel that tug at the heart-strings.
